Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. At first, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level names remained active.
